Protecting the world we live in
Manufacturing furniture can be costly on the environment and at Sable Island we believe that protecting the world we live in is more important than making a profit. This philosophy is woven into every aspect of what we do within our business.
Life cycle costing It starts with the recognition that whilst wood is a renewable resource, by making our furniture last longer it will need replacing less often thus be less costly in raw materials. We deliberately design our products to last longer rather than to be cheap to produce.
Ethical species choices We encourage our clients to work with resources which are less prone to sustainability problems. We have a wealth of knowledge about the sustainability of different timbers and we believe that it is inappropriate to use endangered species just to get an interesting finish. We also discourage the use of woods where the harvesting can cause irreparable to the local environment.
Green shipping Adding air miles to a product greatly increases its environmental impact. We work with clients advising of all lead times so that where possible we leave enough time for sea freight rather than flying our products to site. This is also less costly financially.
Manufacturing process Our manufacturing processes have all been carefully evaluated to ensure that wherever possible we reduce our environmental impact but also promote ethical employment. Our furniture is made by skilled craftsmen and women in a very traditional manner and although heavy machinery is used during the milling stage, in the end it comes down to people hand-making furniture. We focus on craftsmanship rather than bulk manufacturing, and although we use high tech equipment such as CNC where appropriate, we prefer for instance to incorporate designs hand carved in wood rather than polyresin injection castings.
Raw materials All of our raw materials have been researched to ensure that where possible we use environmentally friendly products within our manufacturing process. From the choice of lacquers to the wrapping and packaging we use we aim to have a small carbon footprint as possible per product we make.
Recycling We know that many of our customers share our concerns about the environment thus we also offer a recycling service for any of our products. When our products do reach the end of their life cycle we can quote for uplifting and full recycling of any of our products to ensure they leave as little impact on our planet as possible.
